Why Body Oil Is the Best Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Publish date: 2024-06-15

Anyone who deals with dry skin knows it's not always easy to find a solution. Sure, there are many lotions out there, but not all of them last all day. Some formulas are a little too heavy and others can be pricey.

That's why you should think about adding a body oil to your skincare routine. Not only do they feel luxurious after a long bath or steamy shower, but an oil can help smooth and nourish skin.

"Oils can help hydrate and soften the skin," says Dr. Shari Marchbein, board-certified dermatologist and Unilever skincare ambassador. "They can be used for all skin types and can be used alone or in combination with a moisturizing cream." However, the MD mainly recommends the latter for those with extremely dry or sensitive skin.

And even if you are someone who experiences breakouts beyond your face, don't believe the hype: Oils can still be very beneficial for your skin. "Certain oils, including Argan oil and jojoba oil, simulate sebum, so are good for even those with acne-prone skin."

When it comes to proper application, you technically can rub on an oil — like avocado oil, for example — any time, however, the dermatologist says it best to apply one while the skin is damp. "As with all moisturizers, I typically recommend applying within 60 seconds of coming out of the shower in order to seal in moisture," she explains.

The final plus? Body oils can be used year-round and they are a great alternative to heavy creams in the summer when you want soft, smooth skin and a full body glow without the greasiness — just don't forget to layer at least SPF 30 on top.
