Where Are Scott Wellington and Tabitha Howe Now?
Investigation Discovery’s ‘Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry?: Knock-Knock, Evil’s Here’ narrates the bizarre tale of Scott Wellington, who conned his company and colleagues of about $7,000 after feeding them a false story of his wife, Tabitha Howe, suffering and dying from terminal cancer. The incident happened in Hudson, New Hampshire, for over a year before it cracked open in April 2011. So, who are Scott and Tabitha, and what happened between them? Let’s find out.
Who Are Scott Wellington and Tabitha Howe?
In the summer of 1998, high school graduate Tabitha Howe was excited to live with a group of friends. She worked at a restaurant across the street, played video games, and partied with her roommates. She reminisced, “We were having a good time.” However, Tabitha’s newest roommate Scott Wellington seemed not to fit in. She described him as a “young kid who was not very likeable and possessed an arrogant attitude.” Yet soon, she discovered he had a charming side and paid attention to her.
Tabitha said, “He listened very well. For example, most men wouldn’t notice when I painted my nails, but he did. When we were at work, he would clean the house. She stated that Scott seemed decent, and they became very close. Within a few months, they went from being good friends to being a couple. Tabitha talked about how she thought what they had in common could be a good thing and that they could build a life together. She said that Scott was her “first love” on the show, and her friend Emmy Agee remembered how the two of them laughed at each other’s jokes.
Over the next two years, the newlyweds moved into their own place. Tabitha got a job as a Clerk in the accounting department of a local convenience store so she could help pay for her family. Scott worked as a Machinist during the day while she worked the night shift. He made good money. He lost his job in March 2003. For the next few months, he worked at different places. Tabitha worked two jobs to help support the family, and she said that Scott didn’t want to work or help with housework.
But in July 2003, Scott got a good job as a machinist in a factory in Greenville, just across the state line in New Hampshire. It couldn’t have come at a better time, right before they had their second son. Scott and Tabitha bought a flat close to their house and got a postbox. Scott holds the keys to the postbox. They were soon engaged, but they never set a date for the wedding. In 2005 and 2009, the couple had two more children, and Scott got a job as a Machinist at C&M Machine in Hudson.
Where Are Scott Wellington and Tabitha Howe Now?
Tabitha said that as they worked more hours, Scott became more controlling and tried to keep her from going to work with him. He said no every time she asked to bring the kids to his office for lunch, but he never said why. The show says that in December 2010, Scott bought a $3,000 house by saying it was his Christmas bonus for helping his company get a big contract. But he attacked Tabitha while she and her friend Emmy were playing a game online. He gave no reason for this.
Tabitha let it go, but in March 2011, she broke off the engagement and kicked Scott out. She didn’t want him near her, but he was going to see his kids at Easter. When Tabitha went to the post office on April 25 to get her mail, she found a sympathy card among a bunch of unpaid bills. When she opened the card, she was shocked to see that it was for Scott and that it was about his wife’s death. Also, the envelope had some money orders inside.
Tabitha got a restraining order and talked to Scott’s boss because she thought he was going to kill her. She was shocked to find out that he had made up a story that she had been fighting breast cancer for a year. Scott told his coworkers that his wife had died, even though he had just had a double mastectomy, after Tabitha kicked him out. Reports say that it all started in October 2010 when he held a fundraiser for his “sick” wife and four kids. Scott got about $2,000 in donations, but he never sent the goods. His boss, Bob Prowker, also said that he took more and more money from the owner of C&M, up to $5,000, after the owner said he couldn’t pay for Christmas.
The 31-year-old man was charged with two counts of theft by deception. On May 16, 2011, he pleaded guilty to one count. The show says that he went to jail for a few days and was then put on administrative probation. Scott said he took the money to support his family, but Tabitha said she had never seen any of the money except for the $3,000 she got for Christmas. Even though no one knows where he is right now, Tabitha’s home address has not been made public out of respect for her privacy. The show says that Scott will stay on probation until he pays back the $7,000 to two charities that fund cancer research.
