An upcoming Hulu docuseries will shed light on the untold story of “Freaknik,” the Atlanta-founded cultural event also known as “Black Spring Break.”

The 1st “Freaknik” started in 1983, and was at 1st simply a picnic at a public park near the Atlanta University Center, which was organized by the student group the DC Metro club, intentionally for students who couldn’t afford to return home for spring break.

The event earned vouge, and, by the mid-90s, became a full-blown block party absolute with live music, street food, vendors, and more. The festival was shut down and disheartened by the city by 1999 but was resuscitated 20 years later in 2019.

There is no release date is provided yet for Hulu’s Freaknik documentary, and the streaming platform Hulu has not yet put out an official press release or trailer.

However, we can say that the Freaknik documentary will release in 2024, possibly in mid-April 2024, which would be the 40th anniversary of the 1994 Freaknik celebration.
