The next Rocky movie is about Apollo Creed's son, and it looks promising in this trailer

The Rocky series looked like it was as finished as the boxer himself after 1990's Rocky V, but 2006's Rocky Balboa brought the franchise back to respectability. This year will bring us the first Rocky spinoff, Creed, and its debut trailer packs a powerful nostalgic punch.

Creed focuses on Adonis Creed, Apollo Creed's son, played by Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights). Adonis is a fighter himself, and he seeks out Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) — still running Adrian's, the restaurant he named after his late wife — for mentoring. Scenes in the trailer portray Adonis as a young man with a rough-and-tumble upbringing, and considering all the uplifting movies about white boxers, it's encouraging to see a film about an African-American fighter.

Creed is directed by Ryan Coogler, who previously directed Jordan in Fruitvale Station. The film also reunites two alumni of The Wire in Jordan and Wood Harris, who played drug kingpin Avon Barksdale in the HBO series. Creed hits theaters Nov. 25.
