Matt Lanter Talks 90210 Series Finale, New Show Star-Crossed

Publish date: 2024-06-22

When The CW decided to cancel 90210 after five seasons in March, writers were under pressure to rework the final episode (airing Monday, May 13 at 8 p.m. EST). Series star Matt Lanter, who plays reformed bad boy Liam Court, reveals what viewers can expect from the series finale and shares his post-90210 career plans with Just Jared.

“The plan was, if we had come back for Season 6, we were going to be set five years into the future,” Lanter explains. “It was really cool, but last minute, we got the call that we needed to change things.”

The cast had already done a final table read before getting the news that 90210 would be ending after 114 episodes. Lanter and his costars were excited about what writers had in store for their characters had the show been renewed for a sixth season.

“We were all five years older and obviously at much different places in our lives. My character, I was just getting out of jail,” says Lanter, whose character was framed for a bombing in the May 6 episode. “It was really cool. We were talking about changing looks and everything — buzzing my hair, all kinds of crazy stuff.”

Following the cancelation news, the script was rewritten to give the characters a proper goodbye. “I hope fans are going to be happy with that,” the 30-year-old says. “It was kind of abrupt for all of us, but we did what we could with it.”

Lanter hints that Liam and Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes) may rekindle their romance in the series finale. “Without trying to give away too much, I feel like there is happiness in their lives in some way,” he says. “People should definitely tune in, especially fans of Liam and Annie. There is a payoff.”

The engaged actor calls his last days on set “bittersweet” and says the cast became like a family. “It’s very odd to go to work the last day knowing you’re never going to go back,” the Ohio native admits. “I feel blessed for the opportunity to have been with a show for five years. I had an incredible time, I met great people and I had some amazing experiences. I am forever grateful for that.”

When production wrapped, the cast and crew were invited to buy set pieces during a warehouse sale. “I got a bunch of my wardrobe, which is kind of cool — some cool jackets, shoes, and stuff like that,” Lanter says. “I got some other crazy stuff from the set, and it was really cheap, too!”

Luckily, Lanter will be back on The CW this fall in Star-Crossed (opposite Friday Night Lights alum Aimee Teegarden). “The logline is basically like Brown vs. the Board of Education with aliens, mixed with an epic romance,” Lanter tells Just Jared. “It’s really cool.”

The series finale of 90210 airs Monday, May 13, at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
