Imani Bass Obituary: Hit And Run Linked To Death
New Orleans is mourning the tragic loss of a talented artist and DJ, Imani Bass, whose life was cut short in a devastating hit-and-run incident.
Imani’s mother, Aimee Bass, recounted the heart-wrenching details of the incident that claimed her child’s life.
On that evening, Imani was on their way to a DJ gig at Hotel St. Vincent, riding a blue Vespa through the city’s bustling streets they called home.
As fate would have it, tragedy struck when a man, later identified as Bryan C. Mitchell Sr., was recklessly speeding in a stolen SUV.
Then the SUV swerved left from the far lane, colliding with Imani on their Vespa, and without a moment’s hesitation, the driver fled the scene.
The New Orleans police sprang into action, and the following day, Bryan C. Mitchell Sr. was apprehended while changing a tire on Interstate 10 East near the Crowder Boulevard exit.
Similarly, the SUV he had been driving was confirmed as stolen, and Mitchell admitted to his involvement in the hit-and-run incident.
He now faces charges of hit-and-run driving resulting in death and illegally possessing a stolen vehicle, with bail set at a substantial $300,000.
What compounds the tragedy is the revelation that Mitchell was subjected to carrying a list of outstanding arrest warrants, including charges related to theft and possession of stolen property.
With all that, Aimee Bass, Imani’s mother has many questions about how Mitchell, a person with a criminal record and a penchant for endangering others, was allowed to roam freely, speeding recklessly in a stolen vehicle.

Growing up in Uptown and navigating the creative corridors of McGehee’s preschool program, Lusher Charter School, and Mandeville High School, Imani’s artistic journey began early.
Imani’s mother, Aimee, fondly remembers their boundless creativity.
Imani’s artistic spirit was palpable whether it was zipping up models for a fashion show or dozing off beside her grandfather Clarke’s sewing machine.
Similarly, as they reached the age of 30, their multi-media talents had fully blossomed, establishing them as a muralist, fashion designer, tattoo artist, and DJ.
In addition, one significant influence on Imani’s path was their apprenticeship with Jacci Gresham, the proprietor of Aart Accent, the oldest tattoo shop on Rampart Street in New Orleans.
Imani Bass was crafting a distinctive reputation in the tattoo community, infusing their work with a fantastical, dreamy, and punk-inspired flair that was uniquely their own.
Imani Bass, affectionately known as an “Anime Punk Fairy,” brought a touch of whimsy and magic to everything they touched.
Their vibrant, imaginative spirit was a beacon of inspiration in the creative world they inhabited.
Nevertheless, it is a profound loss that Imani departed from this world far too soon, leaving behind a body of work that will continue to inspire and captivate the hearts to witness their artistic brilliance.
